SS-31

Published research indicates that SS-31 associates selectively with cardiolipin, an anionic phospholipid that is largely restricted to the inner mitochondrial membrane. Biophysical studies report that the peptide partitions into the membrane interfacial region through combined electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions and modulates the surface electrostatics and lipid packing of model and mitochondrial membranes. Through this cardiolipin interaction, research models describe SS-31 as helping to preserve the organization of the electron transport chain and the architecture of mitochondrial cristae.

In preclinical systems, research indicates that this cardiolipin binding is associated with maintenance of cytochrome c electron-carrier function and with reduced generation of reactive oxygen species under conditions of mitochondrial stress. Reported observations in cell and animal models include effects on oxidative phosphorylation efficiency and cristae network stability. These mechanistic descriptions derive from laboratory and animal studies and are not statements of clinical efficacy or human benefit.

Aplicaciones de investigación

  • Biophysical studies report that SS-31 partitions into lipid bilayers and modulates membrane surface electrostatics in a manner related to membrane surface charge (Mitchell et al., 2020).
  • Cross-linking mass spectrometry has been used to map an SS-31 mitochondrial protein interaction landscape, associating the peptide with components of oxidative phosphorylation and 2-oxoglutarate metabolism (Chavez et al., 2020).
  • Research characterizes SS-31 as a cardiolipin-interacting compound proposed to protect cardiolipin's role in electron transport chain organization in preclinical models (Szeto, 2014).
  • In a rat cardiac ischemia-reperfusion model, the cardiolipin-binding peptide was reported to mitigate fragmentation of mitochondrial cristae networks (Allen et al., 2020).
  • Review literature summarizes preclinical observations of reduced reactive oxygen species generation and stabilized cristae structure across multiple mitochondrial-stress models (Tung et al., 2025).

Validación analítica

SS-31 is verified via LC-MS and HPLC analysis. Each lot is tested for identity, purity (≥99% target), and endotoxin levels. Full certificate of analysis is available upon request.
